Incarceron is a vast, sealed prison populated by gangs of thieves, mechanical rats, wise men called the Sapienti, and people and animals that are half-biological and half-machine, all constantly watched by omnipresent electronic eyes. For centuries, no one has gone in, and no one has gotten out. What started out as an experiment in creating an ideal environment for inmates has evolved into a grim, inescapable, hellhole. Incarceron itself has taken control.
Our two main characters are Finn, a boy born of Incarceron but that sees visions of stars, and Claudia, the daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, who enjoys a tightly controlled life of luxury Outside. The twisty story of their mutual escapes is inventive and suspenseful, culminating in an action-packed ending crying out for a sequel. (Which, it turns out, is due next January.)
